Buffalo Dam has played a vital role in water supply and irrigation for the Wangaratta region and the Ovens Valley since its construction in 1965. The dam provides water for town supply, agriculture, and environmental flows, supporting local communities and industries.

To ensure its ongoing reliability, we are undertaking essential upgrades to key infrastructure. The dam’s two outlet valves, which control water releases, have been in place for nearly 60 years and have now reached the end of their nominal useful life. These valves, along with associated equipment, will be replaced or refurbished as part of this project.

By investing in this upgrade, we are securing the long-term sustainability of Buffalo Dam and ensuring it continues to operate safely and efficiently for generations to come.

What to expect

Minimal impact on water supply

  • The upgrade will be staged to ensure water availability for customers, with only one valve being replaced at a time.

Road closures & traffic changes

  • A signed detour route will be in place to assist road users
  • Traffic delays may occur, and we encourage drivers to plan
