About Mildura Weir

For almost 100 years Mildura Weir has supported irrigation, tourism, navigation and recreation. Completed in 1927, it is a critical asset in the Murray River system.

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) operates and manages the Mildura Weir on behalf of the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA).

The weir has served the community well, but it is time to evaluate options for a new structure to ensure its long-term viability.

GMW is leading the project in partnership with the MDBA.

The project aims to improve native fish passage, support environmental and socio-economic outcomes, enhance operational safety and reduce maintenance costs.

The first stage involves undertaking options analysis and developing concept designs to develop a detailed business case to replace the weir.

The Mildura Weir Replacement Project aims to replace the existing 100-year-old weir with a new, contemporary structure that enhances safety, improves fish passage, reduces maintenance costs, and supports environmental, economic and community benefits.

The current weir, constructed almost 100 years ago, does not meet contemporary engineering standards. Advancements in engineering and operational efficiency mean a replacement is necessary to achieve the performance, safety, and sustainability standards of today and into the future.

The new weir will enhance safety, reduce maintenance costs, improve fish passage, support wetland restoration, improve water quality, support employment, and contribute to a sustainable future for the river and its ecosystems.
