About the Future Services Strategy

GMW is developing a future services strategy for our Pumped Irrigation Districts, which includes Nyah, Tresco and Woorinen.

The Nyah and Tresco Irrigation Districts are facing aging infrastructure and viability challenges.

Both irrigation systems are over 100 years old, and the original channel systems were replaced with low-pressure pipelines in the 1960s and 1970s.

Major elements of the systems are in poor condition and there is an increased risk of service failure. There has also been significant land and water use changes in both districts.

Woorinen is the most recently modified of the three pumped irrigation districts and was updated in the 1990s / early 2000s.

The strategy will cover how each district is considered most likely to progress over the next five to 30 years, and the infrastructure and service requirements for these future scenarios.

RSVP to our Community Sessions now

Aging pipes and changing land use mean pumped irrigation services in our region are facing serious challenges. GMW is inviting all customers, residents, property owners, businesses and organisations to get the latest updates and help shape decisions about future infrastructure investments.

These sessions will be run in partnership with Fifteen50 and JumpLeads.

Session 1: Information and Ideas was held on Thursday 13 November 2025 and focused on sharing early technical insights and gathering community feedback on current conditions and future service needs.

Additional community sessions to explore the future of the Nyah and Tresco Irrigation Districts in more detail were held on Thursday 27 November 2025.

Session 2: Options and Solutions will be held in Swan Hill on Thursday 26 February 2026.

Please RSVP to the February 2026 session using the form below.

Thursday 26 February 2026 10:00 am to 01:00 pm

Issues and Opportunities: what we've heard so far

In June we released the Pumped Irrigation Districts Future Services Strategy Issues and Opportunities paper for feedback.

The Issues and Opportunities paper was an initial step in shaping the Future Services Strategy for the Nyah, Tresco and Woorinen districts, and included the current understanding of the key challenges and opportunities for the future.

In May and June, we also undertook phone surveys of Nyah, Tresco and Woorinen customers.

Following your feedback, we are now releasing a summary of what we’ve heard from you so far.

Those that offered their thoughts included landowners, irrigators, businesses and local representatives who are directly impacted by the future of the pumped irrigation services.
